I don’t know what cosmic fate it is that every time I’ve launched Fine Tailoring I’ve been in some version of pregnancy or postpartum. But whatever the reason, Volume Three might be my favourite yet.
When I designed Volume Two I was pregnant with Ralph, and it became a collection inspired by transitions. Starting a family or becoming an empty-nester. Going through the end of a relationship or meeting the love of your life. Moving countries or moving out of home. Navigating grief, illness, or a postpartum body you don’t recognize. Those universal transitions where clothes can help bridge the gap between who you are and who you’re becoming.
So when it came to designing Volume Three, the question I asked was: What do you wear once you arrive? Now the mother of a newborn and a toddler, I’m no longer anticipating the arrival of motherhood, I’m here. Right in the messy thick of it, suspended between hope and exhaustion. And so it became a collection inspired by arrivals. What do you wear once you've found the great love or the great job. When you've lived in a new city long enough to no longer feel like a tourist. When you've set the date and now just need the dress. Made the reservation and now just need the blazer.
I designed every piece of this collection with its second and third life in mind. You might buy the Darling Blazer and Running Errands Shorts to wear to your rehearsal dinner, while knowing you'll wear the shorts with an 01 Singlet come January, and the Darling Blazer with jeans to your anniversary dinner a year from now. The MM woman is dynamic, multi-faceted and nuanced, and she'd never waste a great outfit by only wearing it once.
The kind of woman who keeps reaching for the dress she wore on her wedding day, now intended for birthdays and Christmas Days. Each time discovering a brand new, fully-realised, version of self.
